When the temperature drops, it's tempting to settle into a favorite chair and wait for spring. But staying active through the colder months helps keep your body strong, your balance steady and your spirits bright.
The good news? You don't need a gym or icy sidewalks to stay on the move. Hallways, community centers and shopping malls offer warm, safe places to get your steps in. Seated stretches, arm circles and leg lifts build strength without strain, and simple balance moves, like standing on one foot while holding a counter, can help prevent falls.
If you enjoy company, try a gentle yoga, tai chi or group exercise class to add fun and friendship to your routine. And remember, it doesn't have to be a long workout. A few 10-minute sessions throughout the day count, too.
If you head outside, wear shoes with good traction, dress in layers and take your time on slick surfaces.
As always, check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.
